Interior Window Shutter Benefits

It’s no secret that plantation shutters provide light control and privacy for Minneapolis homes. What you might not know is how well they work, or how the adjustments can contour the atmosphere. Adjusting the louvers is key to creating levels of lighting and privacy. Interior shutters can offer the “on/off” switch for light and privacy, but it doesn’t have to. The other benefit that might not be as apparent is the energy efficient design. Framed into the window, the air flow is reduced, allowing the interior air to remain regulated. Want to stop the brutal, direct sunlight, or the rising temps from that sun? You can by simply closing the louvers. This also reduces the amount of fading and damage caused by UV rays. Have you ever considered how easy shutters are to clean? Simple dusting or a damp cloth keeps your investment looking beautiful for years to come.

Shutter Louver Details + Tilt Control

The adjustable louvers of your interior shutters make customizations to light control and privacy easy. Close the louvers tight when you want darkness. Open them fully to enjoy incoming light and outdoor views. Tilt the louvers upward toward the ceiling to invite natural light in, directed up to illuminate the space, but control privacy. Opt for split tilt shutters for a balance of light and privacy, similar to the top down shades feature, where the top section is open to let in light and views, while the bottom is closed up light for privacy.

The tradition of plantation shutters often feature a center tilt rod. That look is still a favorite, but many homeowners also love the idea of increasing the view-through. With rear tilt, or hidden tilt, the tilt rods are out of the way for a clear view of the outside landscape.

FAQ of Interior Shutters

Plantation shutters are a well-loved and well-known window treatment, but it’s okay if you still have questions. Our window covering designers will walk you through some of the most frequent shutter questions. If you still have more, reach out to our team–we’d be happy to help!

Are plantation shutters capable of room darkening?

Yes, they are! The shutter louvers are able to close completely so very little light can enter. When it’s bright outside, you may see a slight glow along the edges of the louvers, but the room will be capable of having a room darkening effect so you can rest, or enjoy a movie in the middle of the day. We typically tell clients that shutters won’t deliver a pitch black environment on a bright day, but they will keep the majority of light out and will remove any distractions from outdoor light during the night.

Will white shutters yellow and warp as time goes by?

It’s a possibility–and that’s why we always tell clients to dos their homework if you’re shopping different brands for shutters. White shutters are prone to yellowing, and other colors and even wood shutters might crack or warp over time. This is why looking into the brand you’re purchasing, the materials they use, the finishes they provide and the warranty offered are all very important considerations. Hunter Douglas shutters are crafted and constructed with materials and finishes to prevent the breakdown of the interior shutters. They are intended to last.

Are interior window shutters still stylish window treatments?

We call them timeless–plantation shutters add elegance and sophistication to any room. They have been called, “the furniture of the window,” due to their ability to bring upscale presence to a space. They also coordinate beautifully with a range of design styles, making them an instant classic in many homes. They complement the look of trim within your home, offering that stunning built-in look so easily.

Is there a downside to installing shutters?

When it comes to plantation shutters, most homeowners would note that the cost can be a discouraging factor. Window shutters will add value to your home, as they are considered to be a high-quality feature, something that will last for years to come.

How does cost relate to the type of shutter?

We normally talk with clients about the materials used in constructing the shutters. Wooden window shutters are typically the highest cost, based on the real wood and the process used for hand-crafting them. Vinyl shutters, on the other hand, are normally perceived to be more budget-friendly, but may offer less customizable design detailing than wood. In the middle, we offer a hybrid shutter, crafted with a combination of wood and man-made elements for strength and long-lasting durability. From there, we will identify specific shutter details and features that can increase the value, such as door handle cut-outs, tilt bar choices and louver sizes. Operating features play a part in the cost of the project, from the standard operation of hinged panel to specialty options, like motorized shutters.
