Things to Consider when Choosing New Windows

Replacing your windows can seem like a big undertaking—that’s because it is! New windows are a large investment in your home, but a worthwhile one. And, with our guide, you’ll be on your way to finding the best windows for your space.

Start Here.

Before you dive into choosing new windows for your home, consider each space. How does the window function? What is missing? What design suits you best? First, let’s get into the different types of windows.

Fixed vs. Adjustable

Fixed windows are perfect for maximizing views and bringing in natural light. Adjustable windows, like casement or double hung windows, allow for fresh air and tend to be easier to clean. Each space has unique needs, so you may end up with a mix of fixed and adjustable.

Single and Double Hung Windows

Commonly seen on the front of the home and in bedrooms, single and double hung windows are simple to operate and offer child safety features. They can be an escape route in the event of a fire or flooding. What’s the difference?

Single Hung: Opens from the bottom only. Easy to use, but may be more difficult to clean.

Double Hung: Opens from both top and bottom. More choices and easier to clean.

Casement Windows

Crank open for air. They’re also great for views, as well as lowering window coverings while the window remains open. These appear to look more like fixed windows.

Sliding and Folding Windows

If you’re choosing new windows that look more like fixed windows, sliding and folding windows are another great option. This style has many benefits, including allowing for amazing view-through and natural lighting. These open to the side, too, for fresh air. But, one challenge with this design is cleaning maintenance. Debris can collect, which makes it harder to open when the mechanism gets dirty—but it’s not impossible!

Tilt Turn Windows

Tilt turn windows offer a highly versatile design. They can swing open like a door, or tilt inward for airflow. This makes fresh air access simple and cleaning much more convenient. However, one long-standing challenge has been managing light and privacy. That changed with the introduction of Hunter Douglas TrackGlide. This innovative system uses a slim track that adheres directly to the window frame, allowing the shades to move seamlessly with the window. The result? Smooth, effective control of light, privacy, and energy efficiency.

Function Is Priority.

Windows do more than just bring in natural light and showcase outdoor views—they help make a room feel open and inviting, even when closed. On the first floor, they may even function as a pass-through from the kitchen to the grilling station. Throughout your home, you may appreciate opening the windows up to let fresh air flow in. And, of course, windows can serve as an important emergency exit in the event of a fire or flooding.

While windows allow natural light to brighten a space, some can let in too much, causing rooms to overheat. In these areas, operable windows provide much-needed ventilation to help reduce radiant heat. But, that’s not the only way to control temperatures. Pairing them with energy efficient window treatments can further help regulate temperatures and keep the space comfortable.

Then Comes Design.

Function should always guide your window choices, but there’s no denying that new windows will significantly influence the overall appearance of your home—inside and out. Elements like color and window grilles offer the perfect opportunity to personalize the design and make it uniquely yours.

Window Grids/Grilles

You have the option to keep your windows clear, or add window grilles—also known as grids. These come in a variety of styles, from classic box patterns to more decorative edging along the sides. Keep in mind, the pattern you choose can influence the view, particularly with smaller windows where grids may be more noticeable.

Choose Your Color

When selecting a color scheme for your windows, there are several popular options to consider. Classic white is a timeless and widely favored choice, offering a clean, versatile look. For a more modern, contemporary feel, black frames are a stylish option—though they often come at a higher price point. If you prefer a warm, traditional aesthetic, a woodgrain finish can add natural charm and character to your space.
